Welcome to OIPE 2012

12th International Workshop on Optimization and Inverse Problems in Electromagnetism

Over the last 20 years, the International Workshops on 'Optimization and Inverse Problems in Electromagnetism' (OIPE) have gained a worldwide reputation. We are glad to announce that the 12th edition of the OIPE workshop series will be held in Ghent, Belgium.

The aim of this workshop is to discuss recent developments in optimization and inverse methodologies and their applications to the design and operation of electromagnetic devices. It is intended to establish an occasion when experts in electromagnetics and other areas (in e.g. engineering, mathematics, physics), involved in research or industrial activities, can discuss on the theoretical aspects and on the technical relevance of optimization and inverse problems, in the general framework of the innovation in electromagnetic methods and applications.

The OIPE series was established in 1989 (Pavia, Italy) on the basis of the strategic importance of optimization and inverse problems in electromagnetic research. Among the guidelines of the OIPE philosophy a prominent role is given to the interdisciplinary. Researchers working in optimization and inverse problems in electromagnetism need quite complex and innovative mathematical tools. Therefore, the people who first established the OIPE workshops aimed for a deep, stable and interdisciplinary cooperation with other scientific communities. This initiative was continued and further developed through a series of biennial events held in Warsaw, Poland (1992), Geneva, Switzerland (1994), Brno, Czech Republic (1996), Jyvaskyla, Finland (1998), Torino, Italy (2000), Lodz, Poland (2002), Grenoble, France (2004), Sorrento, Italy (2006), Ilmenau, Germany (2008), until the most recent held in Sofia, Bulgaria (2010).

Prior to the workshop, a two days doctoral course on optimization and inverse problems in electromagnetism is organized. Five experts will teach PhD students and researchers entering the field, on 'basic electromagnetism and algorithms for forward modelling', 'surrogate-based modelling and design', 'fundamentals of optimization methodologies', 'ill-posedness and regularization methods for inverse problems'.

The 12th edition is organized by the Department of Electrical Energy, Systems and Automation within the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Ghent University. This department has more than 10 years research activities in solving numerical optimization and inverse problems. This research was initiated for the electromagnetic optimization of electrical machines and was later extended to a more theoretical and fundamental level as well as towards other applications in electrical and biomedical engineering.

We kindly invite you to participate to the workshop on 19th-21st September 2012.

Looking forward to welcome you here in Ghent.
